Bijinder’s journey started in India, and in 1975, she arrived in Australia with a bag of saris and only $5 to her name. Over the years, she built a fulfilling life for herself, pursuing education and eventually becoming a specialist teacher and assistant principal. Deeply aware of the challenges faced by those moving to a foreign country, Bijinder joined AASHA, a Sydney-based not-for-profit organisation dedicated to caring for seniors, enabling them to live independent and vibrant lives in Australia.

At AASHA, which translates to ‘hope’ from Hindi, Bijinder and her team are bringing joy, entertainment, and color into the lives of seniors in Blacktown and beyond, making a profound difference in the community. The organisation’s motto, “caring for those who care for us,” is centered around promoting culture-based care. They provide a safe and supportive space for the South-East Asian community, aiming to remove barriers and help the elderly feel valued.

Music and dance are integral to AASHA’s work, particularly Bollywood Dance, which transcends language barriers and provides exercise, mental stimulation, culture, and happiness. The organisation has received recognition for its impact, including the ZEST Award in 2021. AASHA’s programs also focus on preventing early Dementia and Alzheimer’s while supporting those affected by elder abuse and social isolation. They have provided 1,000 free health checks and aspire to expand their services to cover cancer screening and prevention.

Bijinder’s dedication and compassion are evident in the positive impact she brings to the lives of seniors. She believes that small acts can make a significant difference, such as witnessing a mature man finding the courage to dance on a group Zoom call or a member gaining independence by learning how to use public transport.

The letter from the National Australia Day Council recognises Bijinder’s outstanding contributions, as she was nominated for the 2023 Australian of the Year Awards. While she may not have received the award this time, her efforts remain a shining example of what it means to be an extraordinary Australian.
