Hi, I’m Jaskiran Kaur Brar, recently I started a home-based boutique called The Trunk – a fashion studio dedicated to Indian ethnic wear and accessories. The name ‘The Trunk’ reminds me of my childhood, when me and my siblings were younger, we used to get so excited to see what was in our grandma’s trunk (commonly known as sandookh in Punjab), she always had such a big smile on her face while showing her precious possessions to us, which once adorned her beauty.
I have had some health issues in the last few years. Those health issues changed my life and lifestyle drastically but couldn’t break my spirit. Due to my fighting spirit, help & encouragement from my loving caring family and my faith I could overcome that.
I reignited my old passion for fashion designing that I put aside when I moved to Australia 28 years ago. That may have been the end of one chapter, but my family inspired and helped me to start a new chapter ’The Trunk’. I love dolling up my clients, the smile I see on their faces gives me confidence and more fuel to keep going.
I’m proud of my Indian heritage and its vast variety of cultures, languages, and colourful vibrant clothing. Ethnic clothing is simply one of the things which differentiates parts of India from one another. Our ethnic wear plays very important role in our celebration, festivities and not to mention weddings.
I source my outfits and accessories from all over India and try to get them from women running businesses from their homes as this way I can help empower them. There’s a saying “if you educate a boy, you educate 1 person but if you educate a girl, you educate generations to come”. I believe same goes here, that strong empowered women will raise strong independent children. I want to give them wings.
When I am dealing with big businesses and brands, I make sure they are ethical businesses. It’s a must for me to know who I am dealing with. I love supporting people who are trying to establish themselves. With a variety of outfits available for everyday elegance to trending and luxurious event wear, there’s something for every style at The Trunk
